Oda Nobunaga was a daimyo in the mid 1500's that recognized the importance and power of guns. Guns were brought into the country by european traders. His armies were the first to use guns to defend and attack other daimyo. He had destroyed armies that outnumbered him many times larger than his own. He had controlled of almost half of Japan through wars and negotiations by his death in 1582.
