Describe the clan system of Japan

Japanese society sayed firm around powerful clans for centuries. They were led by a noble who was known by a family name and a individual name. These clan members were either related by blood or marriage. They often fought another for power and land since it was the main souce of wealth. Most Japanese in clans were common workers who lived in villages. Their daily task was to farm or fish and others had special skills. Some were enslaved. Slaves were forced to cook, and clean for the Noble, the head of the clan. All members of the clan honored the same divine spirits and ancestors. In the 400's the Yamato clan became established itself as the most powerful clan. Japan's first emperors came from this clan. Another legend was that all members of the Yamato clan were descendants of a sun goddess. Because of this, subjects treat their emperor like a god.
